Project Runway 2 finale

Watched the 3 finalists' showing at Olympus Fashion Week. Maybe because Daniel was the first to show, but I think that he had more interesting clothes, well cut, well designed. Tho as the judges commented, there didn't seem to be a coherence to his collection, which I would have appreciated more to give a sense of it being a proper Collection than just a collation.

Santino did a good job as well (well, duh), practical clothes with flowy materials. But he could really do better losing the attitude and potty mouth, which doesn't seem to be a big prob for the world he lives in.

Chloe, the winner, had what she called her "Fantasy Collection". I can see where she's coming from with the prodigious amount of satin she included, as well as the pouffy floppy sleeves, which were too big and the models looked awkward in them. But I liked the structure of her Collection, particularly the cut-out motif she favours. Cool, funky. Clean lines. But for some of her dresses, the cut of the dress didn't makes sense either. Like.. think it was the 2nd one. The pink one which was close-cut and had a wide border of stiffened satin at the hem.

Then again, who am I to comment? =P

Physics?! Autocratic system

Went for a subject combi briefing at my sis' school today, since she's in Sec2. Mum made me go along to listen and help advise my sis which to choose. When the briefing finally started, 20mins late, it took another 15mins to get to the meat of the matter, the subject combis available. For the stream that my sis is currently in, Express, pure physics is a compulsory subject for Sec3. The sch's argument in favour of having physics as a compulsory subject instead of allowing for a chem-bio 2science combi is: a large part of the express students will end up going to poly or ITE, and physics is more likely to be a prerequisite for reading a particular course than chemistry or bio would.

The counter argument, tho, is: The students who do badly in physics but do much better in chemistry and biology would be forced to give up one of the better sciences and take up physics. Those who do badly in physics would not, in the first place, consider physics-based higher education, especially since they cannot grasp the fundamentals taught at lower secondary level. This, I believe, is logical reasoning. Such students will have to read pure physics and chemistry or pure physics and biology, do badly or even tank physics, and end up with an all-round lousy grade which prevents them from a applying for a desired course in JC/poly. With a lousy L1R5 or L1R2(R1: Math, R2: relevant subject depending on course) B2(next best 2 subjects), students may not be able to even apply for, say, Early Childhood Education, Mass Communications or Business in the polys, not to mention the JCs.

Granted, I'm looking at the downside to the thing, being the usual pessimist an arts student is. But really, if you were the one subjected to the studying and the choosing, wouldn't you feel pressured and indignant that the supposedly all-rounded and (admittedly not-so-)liberal education is forcing you to read a subject that you know you will do badly in? Take me, case in point. Ok, not the brightest student, not the most hardworking, an under-average student. But hey, we can't all be ace students. Maybe I'm a victim of complacency and laziness, but seriously, I remember my chemistry more than physics, and I take a greater interest in bio than physics, even at this level. Physics was, in my opinion, a waste of time, since I wasn't interested in numbers, wasn't interested in formulae, not ever interested in engineering. I got good scores for humanities and language but a rather average mark for the double sciences. And here I am studying history in the end. Math? Ok, I can deal with some aspects of it. Chemistry? Bring it on. Physics? Doesn't come up anywhere in my life. I don't need to know the mechanics of things, not like that. I just need to know they work.

So go figure. Why physics????

"Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind!"

From an Alexander Pope poem, Eloisa to Abelard available here, it is also the title of the Jim Carrey/Kate Winslet film I watched today. I'd thought it'd be a really boring artyfarty abstract show, even with Jerm telling me that "It's a very good show!!" Well, I still found it abstract, but at least I enjoyed it. Better than ozher artyfarty abstract shows I could name. In particular, I preferred the later part of the film, from the point where Joel realises that he can't erase only the bad and retain the good. He tries to halt the deletion process and when that is impossible, attempts to run away with Clem, in his mind. When she suggests that situating them in a memory where she wasn't supposed to exist is the only way, Joel thinks hard, hard enough to actually bring them to scenes from his childhood. Realistically, he has to 'remember' her in memories from before he met her, and after he deletes her memory. I find this concept fascinating.

And because this is déja vu-ish, I shall stop here.

Another quote tho, from Mary, played by Kirsten Dunst, who quotes Nietzsche's Beyond Good and Evil: "Blessed are the forgetful; for they are the better even for their blunders."

"This is really very teh-tariky!"

So said my senior. We were all at Island Creamery (Serene Center), and I'd just come back with the $4.80 apple pie and teh tarik ice cream. XM, being XM, said that after sampling the ice cream. Tsk tsk hahaha. To think that someone w 4As can come up with that. Incl "porky pork", which I can understand after tasting saucisson, but "chicky chicken" takes the cake.

And then there was the "ni" and "ne" joke. Go figure. *shrugs*

Island Creamery makes its own ice cream, and is rather popular, chockfull of ppl, had to wait a long time for a table to accomodate the 7 of us. Flavours like Kahlua Kaffe and Apple Pie, out of the 6 or so flavours there are the more interesting ones. Personally, Daily Scoop seems to have more exotic flavours such as my favourite Brandied Figs and Honey, and the Coconut which is refreshingly light, could eat that forever. K enough abt ice cream, Mum's gg to bring out the Chocolate Rum & Cherry Cake from Awfully Chocolate along Bt Timah Rd outside Serene Center. This is the same shop as the one near.. Upper Thomson I think. I have the impression that it was near Upper Pierce Reservoir. No matter, I don't go over that side.

T'as pensée à ça?

Watching what?

Anime, for the most part. Watched NANA ep16 but it's super draggy - not up to the really interesting parts yet. Waiting on the manga/scanlations. Started watching D.N.Angel, after catching the first ep on tv recently. This series of 26 eps is faster, with 1 mini-story per ep. Not really much of a continuous story, suspect I watch it for Dark. Hah. Been waiting for ep39 of Blood+ since.. 2 weeks ago, but there's no movement on any of the subbing groups for tt series, while the raws are already out till 42. Guess the subbing grp staff are all busy w other things. Exams, perhaps? And, the most promising of all, BLEACH!! Yay!! Finished ep91 today, and from here on it'll get super exciting! Been dragging for the last 10 or so episodes, but the devpts in ep91 are a great lead-in to what is to come.

Then there's the 射鵰英雄傳 (黃日華version - remember that one?) Early days of TVB I think, and tech wasn't so advanced so they cldn't add comp-enhanced graphics or effects, and watching it now, I guess the acting and all that seems more corny. But there were some big names there. Like 曾江 n 秦沛, also 劉單(very funny as 洪七公). Not bad eh? I guess the shows from childhood are much better than the ones we watch in adulthood for the simple reason that as children, we believe what we see on-screen. So much easier to convince children of an ancient martial arts fraternity with the ability to fly (after some mondo training) or that spells and potions actually work. So disturbing too, at the same time, for the same reason. Easier to brainwash.

Enough of dark thoughts at 3.20am. Gonna start on the Korean show My Girl, which has been recommended to me as being "very funny!!! MUST WATCH!!!" okaaaaay. While I still have time, before the monstrous term begins.
