Is it an ego thing?

When I get off the bus every morning at the workplace, I frequently see guys driving up to the passenger drop-off point slightly further up, then getting out to exchange places with their wives/girlfriends who would then take over in the driver's seat (no entendre intended). Why the hassle? Why can't they let their other halves drop them off at work if they were alighting first? You don't see it happen the other way around do you?
